Carolina Soccer Club is excited to announce that the book Sun Tzu Soccer: The Art of War in Soccer Language & Scenarios, written by CSC Executive Director Liam Shannon and released only yesterday, Tuesday April 21st, is already an Amazon best-seller, ranked:
#1 in "Soccer Coaching" new releases, and
#2 in "Soccer" new releases.
Liam's book is based on the classic The Art of War, by Chinese general Sun Tzu .
Composed in the late 5th century BCE, The Art of War is the most well-known and most highly respected work on military philosophy and strategy in history. The now 2,400-year-old text is still used in teaching philosophy and strategy at the leading military academies, including the US Military Academy at West Point and the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst.
Liam commented:
“I am surprised, thrilled, and humbled by the immediate success of Sun Tzu Soccer. It has been a lot of work over a long period of time - 9 years in total - but now it all feels worth it. And no matter how well the book ends up doing, I am happy to have created something, and to have created something I believe has real significance. Sun Tzu remains an undoubted a genius, and therefore to take his philosophies and strategies and translate them into soccer-specific language and scenarios always seemed like a very logical idea to me.
Considering The Art of War created a baseline for military strategy and philosophy, my ultimate goal is for Sun Tzu Soccer to create that same baseline for soccer. That is for fate to decide though. In the meantime I will just try to enjoy having my work published and doing well.”

The Art of War's Cultural Influence
Business Insider named The Art of War as one of the top 25 most influential books ever written, and astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson identified The Art of War as one of the books "every intelligent person on the planet should read”.
The Art of War and Sun Tzu have been referenced and quoted in various movies, including Wall Street (1987), The Rock (1996) The Family Man (2000) Bandits (2001), and the James Bond movie “Die Another Day,” (2002). In television, The Art of War is referenced in two of the most popular and most critically acclaimed shows of all time: The Sopranos and Breaking Bad.
The Art of War has also been famously applied in sports. NFL coach Bill Belichick, holder of the most Super Bowl wins in history, has stated on multiple occasions his admiration for The Art of War. Furthermore, Brazilian football coach Luiz Felipe Scolari actively used The Art of War for Brazil’s successful 2002 World Cup campaign. During the tournament Scolari put passages of The Art of War underneath his players’ doors in the night.
